This solo exhibition brought together 14 works by Lyle Ashton Harris. Harris teaches at New York University, and since 2005 has divided his time between New York City and NYU’s campus in Accra, Ghana. By exploring his personal experience as a part-time resident of Ghana, Harris excavates the shared historical legacy of America and Africa. Harris’s approach is both historical and contemporary: simultaneously engaging rich cultural traditions, the lasting effects of the colonial era and slave trade, African modernity, and contemporary globalization.
Accra My Love II, a new manifestation of Harris’ Blow Up series, was presented for the first time in this exhibition. This mixed-media collage work continued Harris’ investigations of race, globalization, desire, and masculinity and incorporated the artist’s own photographs with layers of ephemera, ready-mades, Post-It notes, newspaper and magazine clippings, and other printed material. The personal and political content within this installation reveal slippages that Harris describes as a metaphor for the embodiment of cultural hybridity.
